Vision is power. A direct gaze can be confrontational or questioning, eyes can look away, or beyond to avoid seeing altogether. The camera can be a great tool to study the psychology behind the act of “looking”. Traditionally throughout the history of Art women have been the objects of the male gaze. Contemporary culture offers the added dimension of the female now taking her turn. In these photographs women stare out at us from behind masks or costumes, some stare into the distance, others have their eyes cut out of the picture completely. Directing the gaze reflects our own response to our own personal power, and what we do with it. Do we abuse it, hide from it, or confidently embrace it? |
